A Message From Flowers

Plants are my friends. I love them and talk to them. They may not be able to reciprocate like animals, but I feel it is still possible to connect with them in spirit.

Some days back, a pot in my balcony garden had flowers in full bloom. I felt so much love for these flowers and had a conversation with them in meditation!

Their beautiful message applies to everyone. Take it if you resonate! Here’s how it went.

Me: You are in full bloom. You look so beautiful!

Flowers: You are also meant to be in full bloom and to live at your highest potential. You are beautiful exactly as you are.

Me: You bring healing and beauty to the world, irrespective of whether anyone notices you or not. You live your purpose fully.

Flowers: You also bring love and beauty to the world. Continue to be who you are and share your light, with or without approval and acknowledgment from others. Live your purpose completely.

Flowers & Me In Unison: We bow down to the Spirit in one other. We are eternally connected through the Web Of Life. Namaste.

How blessed are we to have flowers, plants, and trees in our world!

Energy Medicine & Modern Medicine: A Soul-Stirring Conversation

A pleasant evening in November 2017.

The living room reverberated with sounds of laughter.

The aroma of savories and freshly brewed tea wafted through the air.

The happy party included-

Sanjay, a cardiac surgeon, and his wife Sheela, a psychologist.

Tara, a Reiki healer, and her husband Karan, an architect.

My husband Suraj, a cancer surgeon, and I, a Reiki healer.

We had just moved into a new home and chose to celebrate by having some of our good friends over.

It was a relaxed atmosphere. Tara began to talk about a client of hers – a man with a heart ailment who was receiving Reiki sessions from her.

She believed this story would be of special interest to our cardiac surgeon pal Sanjay.

She said, “Guys, you know what? I have a 68-year-old client. He was diagnosed with multiple blocks in the heart and has been coming to me for Reiki. And now he is completely cured.”

Her husband Karan joined in and said supportively, ” Oh yeah! Tara has given her heart and soul to this case.”

Sanjay reciprocated by nodding his head and listening with interest. So did the rest of us.

Sanjay said, “That’s interesting Tara. Did he receive any other treatment too?”

“Yes he did,” said Tara, “He underwent an angiogram following which a cardiac bypass surgery was also done.”

The expression on Sanjay’s face changed suddenly and I caught him flashing a bewildered glance at Suraj.

A flustered-looking Sheela spoke next, “Tara, then how can you say it was Reiki that cured him?”

My heart began to pound. I knew that engaging in this conversation would take all of us to a very uncomfortable place, where our differences could come in the way of our friendship! Besides, I was in no mood for unpleasant exchanges.

Tara looked a bit shaken up.

Sensing his wife’s discomfort, Karan took over for her.

“Actually, what she meant was…” started Karan, when sensitive Sanjay spoke up and changed the topic gently.

He allowed Tara to have her moment.

Tara and Karan left soon after and goodbyes were exchanged amicably.

I was relieved when they left.

I wanted to make sure everything was alright and said to Sanjay immediately,

“Sanjay, I’m sorry if Tara’s story made you uncomfortable.”

He laughed and said, “Hey! Don’t worry.”

Suraj laughed too and said, “Doctors are used to this stuff. Aren’t we Sanjay?”

Sanjay smiled. So did I.

Sanjay heaved a sigh and went on, “But help me here Haripriya. Tara didn’t mention her client took conventional medical treatment until I asked. Somebody else listening to her story will simply assume that Reiki alone cured his heart condition. Can’t such statements be open to misinterpretation?”

I understood where he was coming from.

“I see what you mean Sanjay,” I said.

“What she said felt like Reiki was the force that cured him and surgery was just incidental,” continued Suraj, “If her client also believes the same, I wonder why he would even opt to have surgery.”

“I guess I have no answers,” I said.

Sheela still seemed troubled and pitched in “Sanjay often asks these difficult questions Haripriya. And to be honest, I have come to ponder them too. Why do some people hesitate to acknowledge the role conventional medicine plays in their healing, while they don’t think twice about giving ALL credit to alternative therapies or to themselves?

“You have a point, Sheela,” I said, “Being energy healers, this is something Tara and I ought to contemplate.”

The evening ended on a pleasant note. But the conversation left a deep impact on me.

I love and cherish my energy healer friends. However, I decided I had to stick with whatever felt fair and valid.

As I reflected on our conversation, I deduced the following-

We opt for conventional medical treatment only when we see some value in it, irrespective of whether we acknowledge this value or not.

Why would anyone bother to go under a surgeon’s knife or to swallow pills with potential side effects unless they know deep down that it is going to benefit them?

And if conventional treatment is helping them, why the reluctance to acknowledge the role it played in healing them?

Does this acknowledgment make us lesser healers or human beings?

We are healers, not magicians!

Healing doesn’t always mean curing physical illnesses. It means bringing body, mind, emotions, and spirit into a state of harmony and balance.

Every system of healing plays a different role. Wisdom lies in knowing how to apply the strengths of each system for maximum benefit, rather than set one up against the other.

I brainstormed this topic for days on end with Suraj until I truly understood how those in the medical community feel when people approach them for help but behave like the medical intervention meant nothing at all!

Some months later, Tara and I had a private conversation. I shared my new insights on health and healing with her. I wasn’t sure how she would respond. Thankfully, she understood and nodded. She looked at me with a soft new light in her eyes. We hugged tight, knowing we had reached a new milestone together.

A sunny afternoon in April 2018.

Our group met again – this time for lunch at Sanjay’s farm.

“So, Tara, how is your client doing?” asked Sanjay, as he handed her a glass of lemonade.

“Who?” said Tara

“The person with the heart condition you treated. Remember you talked about him last time?” said Sanjay smiling.

“Oh yes! He’s doing great. Well, surgery successfully treated his heart. I told you he was coming to me for Reiki treatments. And he loved them. But after recovering from surgery, he trained in Reiki. He now practices it independently. He says Reiki practice helps him stay strong and balanced. He also told me Reiki helped him discover a hidden gift in his illness and he was super thrilled about it!”

“Good for him!” said Sanjay.

“He needs to be on lifelong medication for his heart though,” went on Tara, “Ok Guys, what I am about to share now may sound crazy. But please bear with me because I soooo want to share it.”

“Go on,” said Sheela and listened intently.

I suppressed a giggle. I was certain Sheela was getting ready for another confrontation!

“He also finds great delight in infusing his pills with Reiki before popping them!” burst out Tara with childlike excitement in her voice.

And with that revelation, bellows of laughter echoed through the room!

“Doesn’t sound crazy to me at all. Now, that’s called taking modern medicine to a whole new level!” exclaimed Sanjay.

My heart was at peace.

Every system had taken its rightful place.

Every healer was honored for the gifts they brought.

I winked at Suraj and whispered under my breath “Blessed be the world of healing!”

Radha-Krishna: Divine Mentors In Unconditional Love

Radha and Krishna – a divine couple that is symbolic of Higher Consciousness and Unconditional Love.

In February 2020, we were at a temple of Lord Krishna. I was drawn to a little idol of Radha & Krishna that was up for sale at the temple shop. I brought this home and placed it in my room.

Energy works in mysterious ways and I have no logical explanation to offer for how certain phenomena work. But simply having the energy of Radha-Krishna around me seems to have accelerated my growth in unconditional love.

I began walking the path of unconditional love in 2018. It deepened when I co-authored the book ‘When Spirit Meets Science’ with my husband Suraj in 2019. While Suraj had mastered unconditional love, I still had more work to do.

In hindsight, I feel bringing Radha-Krishna into my home also played a role in helping me make huge strides towards unconditional love.

It is hard to explain or theorize unconditional love. Though I knew what it meant on paper, I didn’t know how to embody it.

By the summer of 2020, life unfolded such that I was able to fully recognize and acknowledge the unconditional love that was present in my life and also give it back.

Dr. Newton Kondaveti, one of my very revered teachers of metaphysics, was presenting at a conference held some years back, when someone in the audience asked him a question-

“Does such a thing as ‘unconditional love’ actually exist in this world?”

His reply has stayed with me to this day. He said-

‘Love is always unconditional. Such is the nature of love. Conditional love is our erroneous creation.’

So, the question we must be asking is “Does conditional love actually exist?”

Deconditioning from the shackles of ‘conditional love’ and moving towards unconditional love was not easy for me. Challenges and tests were part of the journey. Unhealed wounds had to be dealt with and tears had to be shed. It often felt like my world was crashing down on me and all forms of love would disappear from my life. But it didn’t.

Now that I have reached destination ‘Unconditional Love’ successfully and continue to evolve, it feels like –

“Whoa! What a journey! What a feeling!”

All the turbulence I had to confront right from childhood feels worth it, considering where it brought me.

Unconditional love feels intoxicating in some ways and calming in other ways!

Words cannot do justice to it. Only experience can.

As I continue to explore the depths of unconditional love, I wish you a rich and rewarding journey into the realms of unconditional love within your heart!

Energy, Vibration & Reiki: A Cancer Surgeon’s Perspective

Energy, frequency, and vibration.

For me, these were words associated with physics and conventional science.

In 2007, I learned that these words also carry a completely different meaning for other people.

They seemed to be an integral part of Haripriya’s vocabulary and she used them frequently in the context of day-to-day life.

Initially, I found myself baffled by the context in which she used these words! It took me quite some time to get used to them and to know exactly what they mean in non-scientific terms.

Be it choosing a home to move into after our marriage or finding a new workplace for her, Haripriya had to first tune in to the place’s ‘vibe.’ If the ‘vibration’ of a place felt right, she would pick it. If not, she wouldn’t. She did this exercise not only for herself but also for me. Thankfully, she pronounced that the vibe of the hospital I was working at when we first met was excellent!

Now, whenever I need to take big decisions, she shares her inputs on how various options ‘feel.’ And I have come to realize that I value her inputs. I weigh her intuitive insights alongside my own logic and base my decisions on the best of both.

Haripriya also introduced me to Reiki. Way back in 2007, she explained to me that Reiki is a form of ‘energy healing’ that helps to bring body, mind, emotions, and spirit into a state of balance. She said this is done through the laying on of hands over different ‘chakras or energy centers’ associated with the body. These concepts flew over my head as I had a hard time relating to energy in this manner. I told her I would prefer to experience Reiki rather than attempt to understand it with my logical mind.

I have been receiving Reiki from her for years now. I have to say it is a very relaxing experience. I love the soft ambiance that is created with candles and soothing music. I cherish the gentle presence of Haripriya while she works on ‘balancing my chakras!’ I appreciate being encouraged to not think of anything else for a good forty minutes and to just allow myself to relax. I often drift into a peaceful slumber during these Reiki sessions and wake up feeling refreshed.

Peace and healing comfort – this is what Reiki is to me!

My objective and rational temperament is my strength. I cannot think of a scientific explanation for Reiki. But I do know how it makes me feel.

If someone were to ask me what love feels like, I would tell them to try some Reiki!

Decoding Chocolate Cravings

There is something very comforting about the sensation of chocolate melting in your mouth!

While there may be many physiological and/or psychological reasons for chocolate cravings, I personally find that I crave chocolate when I am under stress or am having to juggle multiple responsibilities at once.

Being a mom to an active ten-year-old plus a super active toddler keeps me on my feet each day!

The current spike in Covid cases has made schooling go virtual again, which means more work than usual for parents. Apart from constantly ensuring that my son is focused during class time, there’s more homework to oversee, more sibling squabbles to handle through the day, and bigger messes to clean up around the house.

On the one hand, it does feel amazing to have the beautiful energy of children light up your home. You get to enjoy kisses, hugs, joy, laughter, innocence, and playfulness throughout the day. On the other hand, it can also be exhausting in some ways and you end up feeling like you need a break from all the noisy activity and clutter. If you are a parent, you most certainly understand what I mean!

On most days, I do have my family oversee the kids for a while so I can take some time off. But there are days when I am the sole caregiver throughout the day.

Recently, I had one such day. I was on parenting duty from morning until night. When my husband finally arrived and I was able to enjoy some solitude, I began to crave chocolate!

I stood near the refrigerator pondering if I was reaching out to chocolate for the right reasons.

I asked myself if I should give in to my craving or manage it with grit and determination and allow it to pass naturally.

And you know what?

I chose to give in to the craving!

My reasons for doing so –

From the perspective of health, I would have been concerned if I had felt the need to eat an entire bar of chocolate. Since Reiki practice helps me stay very tuned in to my body, I am very conscious of what I put into my body, and also how much. As far as chocolate is concerned, all I ever eat is one piece or a maximum of two (if the pieces are tiny). And I have no medical conditions that make chocolate a no-no. As I understand, a small amount of chocolate is not harmful to my body in any way.

From the psychological and energetic perspectives, I had had a difficult day, laced with some bitter moments.

So was I craving some sweetness on the subconscious level? Possibly.

Would this amount to comfort eating? Most likely.

While I am certainly not for comfort eating as a routine, I am OK with it as an occasional indulgence. I am human. I believe it is OK to indulge ourselves in small ways at times. If a piece of chocolate can help me re-connect to the sweetness of life on difficult days, then so be it! It’s not like every day is difficult.

And guess what?

I did feel lighter and energised after allowing myself this small sugary indulgence.

After spending the evening being ‘Snappy Mom,’ to my children ‘I was back to being ‘Happy Mom!’

I hope this article inspires you to decode your chocolate cravings!

Reaching Out To Babies In Heaven

The loss of a pregnancy, no matter how early or late it occurs, can be a devastating blow to the mother and father. This post is dedicated to all women and men who have lost their children to complications in pregnancy or birth, or even later in life.

You are not alone. Your pain is valid. Pregnancy loss may be a relatively common occurrence but that doesn’t make it any less painful. Acknowledging your pain is the first step to healing it.

When you get a positive pregnancy test, you assume a little human being will land in your arms at the end of nine months. Rarely do you imagine that something could go horribly wrong midway and that the baby won’t make it.

Our first child, baby angel Siri, left this planet even before she could take birth. I developed life-threatening pre-eclampsia during the latter part of pregnancy. This condition halted the growth of the baby and put my own life at risk too.

Thanks to advances in medicine and timely intervention, doctors managed to save my life. However, we had to let the baby go.

I grieved the loss of Siri for years. I experienced episodes of anger, blame, inadequacy, frustration, and helplessness.

On the physical level, I couldn’t understand (and still don’t) why a young and perfectly healthy woman like myself had to develop a random life-threatening condition. On the soul level though, I believe there was a higher reason for this incident.

To some extent, I am able to intuitively decipher the reason behind this seemingly unfortunate incident but I have not found all the pieces of the puzzle yet. It feels like there are way too many pieces and I am waiting for all of them to fit together and reveal the complete picture to me.

I trust I will find my answer one day when I am fully ready to know, understand and accept it.

It took me several years to come to some acceptance of Siri’s loss. By the Grace of the Divine, we are now blessed with two beautiful children and I love them with all my heart.

Along with my two incarnated angels, I will always love and honour Siri as one of our offspring. I didn’t get to hold her in my arms. But that doesn’t change the fact that she was our first baby.

When I give Siri her rightful place within the family, I find that my love for my other two children multiplies.

Siri may not be here in physical form but I often sense her presence on the energetic level. I cannot offer a logical explanation for this because energy doesn’t always work in logical ways. Many experiences in life have to be taken on trust. I prefer to enjoy such moments for what they offer, minus the analysis.

On this anniversary of her transitioning to the higher planes, I felt inspired to pen down a heartfelt note-

Dearest Baby Angel Siri,

The time we spent together was brief. I wish things had been different. I wish I could have held you and nurtured you.

Our separation seems to have been part of a higher plan. My mind doesn’t understand it but my soul knows there is more to this separation than just pain and misery. I trust that when the time is right, the ‘human me’ will manage to retrieve the answers to my burning questions from the ‘soul me.’

I choose to clear all subconscious and unconscious energy distortions behind this occurrence with the beautiful words of Ho’oponopono-

I am sorry

Please forgive me

I love you

Thank you

I trust these words will transform all pain – hidden and otherwise – and bring healing to you, me, and all involved.

I will always love you from the bottom of my heart. I pray that you are free and happy, wherever you are.

And we will meet again, somewhere across time and space…

This time in the best of circumstances, in accordance with divine will and in perfect divine timing.

This is my promise to you, little one…

Love

Mama

this image shows a girl child who is safe and protected in a blog post by Haripriya Suraj on protecting the divine feminine
divine feminine divine masculine, healthy sexuality, when spirit meets science

Protecting The Beautiful Divine Feminine

Ever since my daughter came into my life, I have felt inspired to take up the cause of the ‘girl child.’

I believe every woman is an embodiment of the Divine Feminine – creative, nurturing, soft yet strong. Unless the Divine Feminine is on par with the Divine Masculine, the world will always remain in a state of imbalance.

If she has to be on par, the least she needs is a safe world.

Unless the primary needs of safety and security are met, how can she ever blossom? A lot of her energy shall be spent watching out for predators who may view her with hunger, or worse still turn her into their prey.

My heart goes out to all the little girls( and women) who do not experience safety and security, not just in the outside world, but even within the walls of their own home. Child sexual abuse is not uncommon at all. I wish we could rescue each girl child who is a victim of abuse and keep her safe. I wish we could do something so the innocence of the Young Divine Feminine remains untouched.

What would it take to create a safe world for the Divine Feminine?

Is awareness sufficient? Is sensitisation the answer?

Yes, these are great first steps, to begin with.

But are they enough?

Unlike perpetrators of sexual crimes, many others may be trained to be respectful to women on the outside but the world within them speaks a different story. Just putting on a facade of respectfulness while one’s inner world is consumed by confusion, suppression or lust isn’t the solution either.

Can we go deeper than just training to behave in a socially acceptable manner?

Can we create an inner shift that fosters a more sacred connection to one’s own sexuality?

When sex is viewed and practiced as a sacred act, it evolves to something more than fulfilling primal urges with random mates, who may not be interested or worse still when it is forced upon them (as in abuse).

Sacred sexuality is about a respectful partnership between two souls, who put their creative energies to use in a conscious manner.

Such a goal may seem too far-fetched to achieve in the imperfect problem-filled world we live in. Who has the time for all this when there are so many more pressing issues to address?

In truth, several of these more pressing issues will also be resolved when the Divine Feminine is allowed to blossom to her highest potential in a safe world. The wisdom she brings has the potential to heal many of the world’s troubles.

We may not have the time to work on such seemingly big goals but change always starts from within.

For change to be lasting and effective, it must occur at the level of collective human consciousness.

For this to happen, at least those of us who have the time and inclination can begin to practice and teach these concepts. As more and more of us start living it, we kickstart the process of evolution of consciousness.

We, humans, are blessed with impressive intelligence. And we always have a choice as to how we wish to use it – to nourish or to destroy. Let’s choose to use it to create a better planet!

Note: The Divine Feminine Energy is not restricted to women, though it is naturally the primary energy operating in many of them. Men also have a component of the Divine Feminine energy in them. However, in the context of this particular article, the word ‘Divine Feminine’ refers primarily to women.

Mindful eating in a blog by Haripriya Suraj in When Spirit Meets Science

Life Lessons in Mindful-Scientific Eating

Thanks to Reiki, I took to the practice of ‘mindful eating’ quite effortlessly and practiced it for years. Reiki helped me tune in to my body completely, knowing exactly how much I ought to feed it and when to stop.

Of late though, the responsibilities of parenting a young child have thrown me off track. I have not been practicing mindful eating and my body has been acting up. I have been trying to schedule my meals around my little one’s nap times so I can enjoy eating in silence. This need to enjoy solitude at any cost has taken a toll on my body. I have had episodes of acid reflux and have needed to pop antacids to soothe my tummy.

My husband Suraj, who has been observing my lifestyle for a while now, brought my attention to the fact that my eating habits have become less than ideal – both from the scientific as well as energetic perspective.

Some points that came forth from the discussion include –

Eating Small and Frequent Meals – I had gotten into the habit of allowing myself to go hungry until my baby slept. The hidden unconscious agenda behind this was that I could relish huge meals at one go (without needing to attend to anything else). I was helped to understand that this strategy isn’t working in my favour and that smaller, more frequent meals are best for the tummy. Eating up to 80% of the stomach’s capacity at a given meal time and leaving some room was recommended to me.

Relaxed and Mindful Eating – As I reflected on Suraj’s observations and suggestions, I also realized I had been eating in a state of hurry and worry. I was constantly anxious to finish eating before my little one could wake up. Add to this the fact that I was gulping down large meals, anyone looking would think I was deprived of food! From an energetic perspective, anxiety isn’t the best energy to put into your body while you nourish it with food.

I am so grateful these insights were brought into my awareness.

I recently resumed the practice of ‘mindful-scientific’ eating. Since I was very mindful, I noticed initially that every time I got ready to eat, my hands tensed up in preparation to grab and my tongue salivated at the mere sight of food on the plate. I realized I must have been approaching meal times in this unconscious manner for the last year or so.

When I became aware of the way my system was responding to food, I took a deep breath and told myself that I have all the food I need. I told myself I will be alright even if my little one wakes up in the middle of my meal. I stopped eating when my stomach was 80% full and ended the meal with a word of gratitude. My tummy feels light now and so does my mind.

Very often, we are unable to see our own blind spots. It is OK for others around us – family and friends- to show us the light!

Did Santa Knock? Merry Christmas!

2007 was a year of several breakthroughs for me. So, it came as no surprise when the Christmas of that year felt extra special too!

I spent the Christmas of 2007 sauntering in the gardens of St John’s Hospital. The hospital had a beautiful giant crib set up to welcome Baby Jesus. My husband Suraj (then fiance) worked there at that time. Knowing my love for Christmas, he offered to show me around the hospital that was all decked up for the festive season.

My inner child felt excited to be present in that bright and colourful space of health and healing. I soaked up all the good vibes floating around.

As I walked around, a huge decorative star on one of the hospital buildings caught my attention. It had the message ” Peace on Earth” engraved on it.

A wave of peace literally washed over me when I read those words.

Being there in that divine space felt like the best Christmas present I could ever get that year! I often travel back in time to that day in 2007 and my body still warms up in joy and peace.

It’s 2021 now and Christmas is here again.

Life’s circumstances have changed. I have a lot more responsibility now. With two beautiful and active children running around the house, I am so happy but also often exhausted. Besides, a messy house with books and toys strewn all over, leaves me feeling grumpy! To make matters worse, a woman I had employed to help with housekeeping had to quit her job.

I recently appointed another young woman to help me around the house.

She spends a couple of hours here every morning. She walks in flashing a big bright smile and goes about her work with a spring in her step. All instructions I give her are received well and she executes them with sincerity. I thought she was being extra nice to me because I am her new employer. However, I soon realised she is equally nice to everyone. When I hear her talking to family on the phone, she sends out the same sweet vibes.

My grumpy moods heal just by listening to her phone conversations! To me, these kind of people who heal simply through their presence are human angels.

I often wished I would find a house help who would work with a smile on her face and my wish has been granted this Christmas. My inner child would like to believe Santa was the force behind this!

Merry Christmas!
